Portraits of a Kuchipudi dancer between rehearsals
PROJECT DETAILS
EDITORIAL NARRATIVE
Sahiti has performed at Ravindra Bharathi since she was nine. We photographed her across two rehearsal days — not the performance, but the hours around it: the ankle bells being tied, the green room mirror, the long stillness before she walks on. Shot mostly wide open in stage-adjacent tungsten and whatever daylight the corridors offered.
“Most photographers shoot the costume. These are the first pictures that look like the dance.”
Temple jewellery, borrowed from her guru
The gopuram she trained beneath for eleven years
Her mridangam accompanist, backstage
Stone figures in the same posture, six centuries apart
